Canapi is the Sicilian name (in Sicilian dialect) of a special sailor’s knot depicted on the label. Sicily has a rich seafarers and winemaking history. The ‘Canapi knot’ on the label symbolizes the union of these two for Sicily historically important industries.
Canapi is made by one of Italy’s most famous winemakers Stefano Girelli. He has built a grand reputation as a wine maker in the north of Italy with the famous winery Casa Girelli. Stefano selects the best grapes from the most beautiful vineyards of grape farmers on Sicily which he has long-term agreements with. This all to ensure the quality and continuity of the product. Modern technology and centuries old traditions go hand in hand resulting in three authentically Sicilian wines with a unique price-quality ratio.
The grapes for the Canapi Grillo (white) come from the vineyards situated in the area around Gibellina in the valley of Belice. This region is situated in the west of Sicily (east of Marsala and south-west of Palermo). In this region a constant western breeze blows, originating over the sea, which apart from cooling also benefits the health and quality of the grapes. This wind allows the vineyards to dry quickly after rain and dew. This discourages moulds and disease to infect the vineyard. The Grillo grape is an authentically Sicilian variety.
